Hello lovely readers, hitting the ground running the first Monday of February with a new post talking all things 90s and delving a little back in time. It’s safe to say I am slightly obsessed, not that I need any more Vogue magazines, but I am on the hunt for the classics to add to my collection. I hope you enjoy this one!
Fashion always seems to do a full circle, and the 90s is making a comeback. The 90s was the era of cultural shifts, iconic music and of course fashion statements that hit the runway. Even if you didn’t live through it, 90s fashion to this day remains a true source of inspiration, and we are seeing more people take this on themselves.
Let’s look back at what defined the 90s and some of the trends that took over.
The 1990s had a huge impact on women, especially in fashion and beauty—the rise of supermodels on every magazine cover. Heads were turning and the world officially became captivated. The early 90s saw the likes of Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Claudia Schiffer, Carolyn Murphy and Christy Turlington, of course we had many more beautiful women to inspire those in the 90s. These women became household names, walking runways for top fashion designers and setting beauty standards globally.
I love the look of minimalism, fashion stripped down to simplicity and effortless chic. Fashion isn’t always about bringing chaos but more often than not the simple elegance of an outfit stands out from the crowd, and we are seeing this more over time. Endorsed by designers like Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. Slip dresses without seams and spaghetti straps, button-up shirts with a utilitarian feel, and a colour palette of neutrals such as blacks, beige, whites and navy. Pastels are a great way to incorporate a hint of colour. We rarely will see patterns, a simple embellishment if so. A look so clean it feels almost untouched.
1990s culture
Back in 1994 and well known and still-loved TV friends premiered on our screens. Jennifer Aniston became an overnight sensation with her signature style. Hitting the bigger screen, Clueless and became an instant fashion classic. We are still seeing this in today’s generation. Then, introducing a whole new generation to music, Boy and girl bands ruled—N’Sync, The Backstreet Boys, The Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child.
